    RAIL.ONE AT INNOTRANS 2014

Intelligent light rail traffic systems for sustainable mobility

Neumarkt / Berlin, 23 September, 2014 RAIL.ONE’s focus for InnoTrans 2014, the international trade fair for transport technology, is firmly on light rail traffic. The company will present solutions and innovations that cities can profit from both economically and ecologically. In addition, RAIL.ONE will showcase new technical highlights such as its trafficable system for ballastless tracks in tunnels.

Local public transport is an important component in ensuring urban mobility. Subways, light rail and trams disburden metropolitan areas of private transport and ensure similar lifestyle opportunities across regions. In addition, they make important contributions to lowering emissions and energy consumption. For construction on concrete, ballast or asphalt, RAIL.ONE offers efficient and reliable track systems that can be optimally integrated into their environments. Highlighting various projects in Germany, Europe and around the world, the company will demonstrate its innovative solutions that ensure constant mobility at InnoTrans 2014.

Cities and communities all over the world are on show

Thus the city of Augsburg, for example, has concluded an extensive mobility project for a sustainable expansion of its local public transport network. The key elements are the rearrangement of Königsplatz and the railway station/inner city connection with implementation of the so-called Augsburg Boulevard. In March of 2012, rebuilding of the triangular junction at Königsplatz was begun, which is the central crossing point for five tram lines. The design of the turnouts (19 units), crossings (3 units) and crossing systems (4 units) and free track areas (1,460 m) used the RHEDA CITY system of RAIL.ONE. In addition, the company was responsible for structural dimensioning, design and construction. The special technical features in this project were the complete preassembly of the track sections and systems in the plant and transport of the preassembled systems. Likewise its partial execution as a mass-spring system and the use of synthetic-fibre concrete.

In Switzerland, too, the expertise of RAIL.ONE is trusted. The community of Samedan is the heart of rail traffic in the Alpine high valley of Oberengadin. In order to meet the constantly rising requirements, extensive work was done in and around the railway station. A particular challenge for the highest-altitude project in RAIL.ONE’s history was the extreme temperature range from -30 degrees to +30 degrees. For the ambitious project which also included lowering the railway line and construction of a new tunnel, RAIL.ONE delivered the proven RHEDA CITY solution, designed as a mass-spring system.

RHEDA CITY is also being used on the Arabian peninsula. On behalf of the construction enterprise Habtoor Leighton Group, RAIL.ONE is delivering different variants of the system for construction of a new tram line in Qatar. Most of the approximately 15-kilometre section is covered with concrete and a short section is also planted with grass. For this, RAIL.ONE is delivering around 14,000 bi-block sleepers that are produced at the Hail plant in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

    RAIL.ONE brings people together

“We help metropolises, districts and people link up to one another with tailored solutions. Innovative light rail traffic concepts make cities more liveable for their residents and offer people of all ages an important degree of independence,” says Jochen Riepl, Chief Executive Officer of RAIL.ONE GmbH. “Whether we create new green spaces with the ‘green track’ or reduce sound and vibrations in densely populated areas with our solutions, our aim is always to make life in the city more pleasant for people. With our combination of quality, environmental friendliness, usefulness and aesthetics and close collaboration with our business partners and customers, we are developing solutions that are trend-setting for light rail traffic.”

RAIL.ONE will also present a selection of other important new developments at InnoTrans 2014 that will also help decisively shape mainline rail traffic and freight transport along with light rail traffic.

Fastening options for turnouts in the RHEDA CITY system

New fastening options for turnouts in the RHEDA CITY system have been developed. Due to their innovative structure, they can be freely positioned on the turnout sleepers with anchor rails. At the same time they are continuously adjustable to the respective angle of the rail. The new developments allow considerably easier and quicker assembly of the turnouts and thus contribute to a higher level of cost-effectiveness for the entire RHEDA CITY system.

Reduction of vibrations in ballasted and ballastless track

As part of the RIVAS EU research project, RAIL.ONE has developed various solutions for reducing vibrations. First, two heavy soled concrete sleepers for the classic ballasted track: one in the shape of a wide sleeper (BBS 4), the second concrete sleeper (B 90.2) with a classic geometry but with an innovative concrete formula and thus a noticeably higher level of bulk density. Secondly, the concrete sleepers of the familiar GETRAC® A3 ballastless track system were equipped with elastic soles for the first time. Likewise the BBS 3.1 sleeper was adapted to the elastic support.

    Trafficable system for ballastless tracks

Another innovation is the trafficable system for use in tunnels. It was developed for series-production readiness and installed in the renovation of the new Schlüchtern Tunnel with the GETRAC® A3 ballastless track system. The basic principle of trafficability, which is based on elements that are divided into small sections and are easy to place, can be used both for the RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system as well as for the GETRAC® A3.

    RAIL.ONE celebrates anniversaries

The RAIL.ONE Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of concrete sleepers and systems provider for railway tracks, will celebrate two anniversaries this year.

    • 120 years since company foundation
    • 60 years of manufacturing concrete sleepers

Neumarkt, Germany, 21 July, 2014 – The RAIL.ONE Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of concrete sleepers and systems provider for railway tracks, will celebrate two anniversaries this year. The company can look back on 120 years since its foundation, as well as 60 years of experience in the development, manufacture, and delivery of concrete sleepers and railway track systems. This makes RAIL.ONE one of the world’s most important and longest-established producers.

Today’s RAIL.ONE GmbH has been closely associated with the rail market for over 100 years. As part of the Pfleiderer Group founded in 1894, it focused originally on the production and impregnation of wooden railway sleepers. In 1954, the company began to manufacture pre-stressed concrete sleepers and continued to expand these activities through organic growth and targeted acquisitions. In April 2006, the business division Pfleiderer track systems became the independent RAIL.ONE GmbH.

With a new name and a history of quality, the now global company offers a broad range of railway track systems for both passenger transportation and freight and heavy load transport. Products and services range from pre-stressed concrete sleepers for ballasted tracks and ballastless track systems for high-speed routes to special solutions for high axle loads. Furthermore, RAIL.ONE is the only system designer and manufacturer which can offer four different production processes which can be individually adapted and optimised to the needs of the client.

“Over 120 years, RAIL.ONE has developed into a leading provider of concrete sleepers and railway track systems. We are very proud of our history. Looking back at our successes and milestones also gives us impetus to move into the future with motivation,” says Jochen Riepl, CEO of RAIL.ONE GmbH. “In this anniversary year – as in the 120 years previously – we face new technological challenges, which we will embrace with enthusiasm in the interest of our clients. Always having an eye towards cutting edge technology and offering our customers innovative, tailored solutions are part of our tradition – a requirement for success in a constantly changing market environment. We look forward to RAIL.ONE’s next 120 years.”

    RAIL.ONE Opens Factory in USA

Total investment of around $22 million Production of around 600,000 concrete ties annually

    RAIL.ONE Opens Factory in USA

    • Total investment of around $22 million
    • Production of around 600,000 concrete ties annually

Clinton / USA, April 29, 2014 – the RAIL.ONE Group, a world-leading manufacturer of concrete ties and system provider for rail-mounted tracks, is opening a new factory today in Clinton, Iowa. Construction of the production facility was begun in 2013. In less than a year, one of the most modern concrete tie plants in the world came into being at a total investment of around $22 million.

In the presence of numerous representatives from the world of politics and the economy, the Lieutenant Governor for the state of Iowa, Kim Reynolds, officially set in motion the new line for the production of concrete ties and symbolically sent a train on its maiden delivery voyage by cutting the red ribbon. Along with the approximately 150 guests – including Union Pacific Railroad’s Chief Engineer, David Connell, and Vice President of Supply and Continuous Improvement, D. Lynn Kelley, Ph.D – Chief Executive Officer Jochen Riepl greeted the Mayor of Clinton, Mark Vulich, and the Chairman of the Clinton Regional Development Corporation, Steve Howes. A factory tour served as the kick-off for the opening event. The participants were able to get a good overview of the production of heavy duty ties for North American freight traffic.

Along with its production locations in Germany, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, South Korea and Hungary, Clinton in the USA is now the 13th production operation for concrete ties and non-ballasted track systems. In the factory, costing around $22 million, 65 new jobs are being created in the region. In the future, the company will produce around 600,000 concrete ties per year in the new production facilities for the railway companies of North America.

“The plant in Clinton is one of the most modern production facilities in the concrete tie industry. That we are able today – after less than a year of construction time – to put it into operation is an unheard-of achievement for our team, to whom I am genuinely thankful,” said Jochen Riepl, Chief Executive Officer of RAIL.ONE. He continued: “Here in the USA with our know-how, we will set the standards for new technologies and for quality in the concrete tie industry.”

Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor for the state of Iowa, also acknowledged the commitment of RAIL.ONE: “Iowa and Germany have always had a special connection. The descendants of German immigrants still make up the largest portion of our population at nearly 36 percent. So it’s just logical that there is a factory here – in the heartland of the United States – that combines German engineering with the American pioneering spirit.”

Mark Vulich, the Mayor of Clinton, emphasized the significance of the new production facility for the future development of his home town: “The location of RAIL.ONE in Clinton shows that our town is an attractive location for international companies.”

Steve Howes, Chairman of the Clinton Regional Development Corporation, supported this viewpoint: “We want to create the ideal conditions for companies. With RAIL.ONE, we now have a global player in our midst which will create new jobs in our region.”

    D. Lynn Kelley, Ph.D, Vice President of Supply and Continuous Improvement at Union Pacific Railroad, also congratulated RAIL.ONE on the opening and praised the innovative spirit of the company: “We are excited about this facility and grateful to RAIL.ONE for bringing their concrete tie products to Iowa and Union Pacific. RAIL.ONE has a long track record of providing quality products with manufacturing plants around the world, from the Middle East, Germany, Asia and now Iowa, we are all very pleased this day has come.”

    Offering the highest quality
With regard to quality, safety and manufacturing technology, the new factory meets the highest standards. This is also reflected in the results of concrete tie production. RAIL.ONE has developed a special type of HHS 36/6 heavy duty tie. It meets both the demanding requirements of the American AREMA specification as well as the specifications of the European EN 13230 standard. With its new factory in the USA, RAIL.ONE completes the first important step in supplying the large railway companies of North America with high-quality heavy duty ties that are produced according to German technological and quality requirements. The new factory is one of the largest production locations of the RAIL.ONE group

    RAIL.ONE puts Leipzig on track

For its Leipzig City Tunnel project Deutsche Bahn is banking on the RAIL.ONE Group’s RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system

    RAIL.ONE puts Leipzig on track

For its Leipzig City Tunnel project Deutsche Bahn is banking on the RAIL.ONE Group’s RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system

Leipzig, 14 December 2013 – With much ceremony and in the presence of numerous guests from the realms of politics and business, the Leipzig City Tunnel, one of the most important transport projects in central Germany, was officially opened after a construction period of ten years. The RAIL.ONE Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of concrete sleepers and systems provider for railway tracks, was one of the pioneers of this once-in-a-lifetime project with its internationally renowned RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system.

With the Leipzig City Tunnel the Saxon metropolis is adapting to the changing demands of inner-city and international rail traffic. Whereas previously major mainline stations were the departure and arrival points for train journeys and mostly linked cities with one another, nowadays they are also part of the urban transit network. Because the growing demands for mobility have brought with them an increasing focus on fast and flexible integration of entire commuter belts, terminus stations, with their unidirectional routing and associated detours, constitute an obstacle. The Leipzig City Tunnel now links the three rail terminals of the Saxon city under the old town and will be used by almost all lines of the new Central German rapid transit network. On a stretch about 4 km long the entire superstructure in the tunnel structures was fitted with RAIL.ONE’s ballastless track system RHEDA 2000®. The bi-block sleepers were produced at RAIL.ONE’s factory in Coswig, Saxony. This local connection was especially important to Jochen Riepl, Chief Executive Officer of RAIL.ONE GmbH: “RHEDA 2000® is being used in countless large cities all over the world. But here in Leipzig it’s like a home game for us. We are delighted that for the City Tunnel, Deutsche Bahn opted for a solution that is being produced in the region. Thanks to the geographical proximity and the personal connection this project was also very special for our workforce.” This major project was officially opened with speeches from Saxony’s Minister President Stanislaw Tillich, Minister for Economic Affairs Sven Morlok, Leipzig‘s Mayor Burkhard Jung and railway chief Rüdiger Grube. In addition, rapid transit trains converged in a “star” formation and a tunnel party was held. Rail traffic will start operating through the City Tunnel from 15 December.
